Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has revealed measures taken by the club in terms of managing national team players ahead of the side’s CAF Champions League trip in Nigeria.
Sundowns had eight players in the Bafana Bafana squad that sealed qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Zimbabwe and Rwanda in the last two weeks. Masandawana take on Remo Stars in the 1st leg of the 2nd preliminary round of the Champions League on Sunday at the MKO Abiola Stadium.

Cardoso on Pressure Ahead of CAFCL Opener
Cardoso admitted the qualifiers were gruelling saying that the club made sure to have training sessions at home just after the FIFA break and also travelled early to Nigeria to help the players get rest.
“It’s a fact that several of our players played two matches recently,” said Cardoso.
“But also, it’s a fact that we travelled early in order to provide recovery time to the players in order for the players to have the proper rest. Yesterday, before departing from South Africa, we had opportunity to make basically the training session where we prepared for the match.”
“And from now on, we just basically tried to adapt to the local, to the conditions we had, to the stadium, to the weather and try to have the place in the best conditions possible to play a good game after tomorrow [today, Sunday].”
