Defiant Pyramids Hold Sundowns At Loftus

Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a 0-0 draw by a defensively resolute Pyramids FC in their CAF Champions League clash at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday afternoon.

Sundowns remain on top of Group A but it’s wide open with all four sides on four points after their draw to the Egyptian Premier League leaders.

TP Mazembe and Nouadhibou drew 0-0 at the Stade de la Capitale yesterday – which opened the chance for either side to stake a claim to the top spot.

But the Egyptian side who surprisingly last in Mauritania last week came to keep it tight with low risk – aiming to perhaps get something on transitions.

Fagrie Lakay cut an isolated figure up front for the visitors but the game plan was clear to frustrate Masandawana.

And it proved exactly that as both sides had seven attempts on goal – but the Egyptians had none on target, while Ahmed El Shenawy was forced into three saves.

Peter Shalulile had the ball in the net 10 minutes before time but it was ruled out for offside, while earlier he failed to pounce on a rebound that could have handed them a lead.

The result remained goalless until full-time despite the red card for Osama Galal in the final minute of regulation time and it’s now all to play for in the group for the race of the knockout stages.

Sundowns host Cape Town Spurs on Wednesday before their trip to Cairo to face Pyramids for their fourth fixture of the riveting group stage campaign.
