Difference Between Now And 2016 – Onyango

Mamelodi Sundowns veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango has noted some differences in the CAF Champions League since the last time the side won it a decade ago.

Onyango is one of two players that were part of the historic Sundowns side that lifted Africa’s premium inter-club trophy in 2016 and hopes things will go the same way for his side time around.

The Ugandan’s sentiments come as the Brazilians gear up for the deciding leg of this year’s Champions League final against ASFAR away in Rabat on Sunday.

The former Betway Premiership champions carry a 1-0 lead into the second leg and Onyango believes the game has evolved and what Sundowns need to do is to draw inspiration from the times they came close to winning the title especially last season where they finished second.

“Well, in 2016 we had a good advantage, three goals and a clean sheet, but the game has changed lately,” said Onyango.

“There was no VAR before there’s VAR now, but we just need to use the experience that we’ve gained in the previous few campaigns, especially last season, where we didn’t get results at home. And this time around, we got results at home and we need to defend our results by defending, we need to score.

“So, we just need to play the game the way it comes and try and not concede, because that’s very, very important for us not to concede. A good team [ASFAR] that has been scoring at home, but we’ve also been scoring away from home. So, I think the final is going to be very, very key and very good for the supporters.”

The 41-year-old believes it’s the Brazilians’ turn on the podium again and they don’t want to let it slip away.

“Yes, I believe this time around it’s our time,” added the former Cranes captain.

“The guys are really, really motivated to give the club a second star and they fought so hard. It’s been a very difficult season for us, very difficult group in Champions League, but we managed to come this far.

“So we can’t let it slip away.”
