Downs Take Control Of CAFCL Group With Win At Pyramids

Mamelodi Sundowns have collected a crucial away win at Egyptian Premier League leaders Pyramids FC, beating them 1-0 thanks to a goal by Teboho Mokoena.

While the game stared relatively slow from both sides, Sundowns carved out the opener in the 17th minute.

After Lucas Ribeiro Costa found himself across multiple Pyramids defenders inside the box, he played a smart ball to Mokoena, who was lurking outside the box before sending a powerful shot into the back of the net.

Pyramids took 23 minutes to have their first shot, but an attempt by Fagrie Lakay missed the target.

Sundowns had a brilliant chance to make it 2-0 just before half-time but Pyramids goalkeeper Ahmed Mayoub denied Themba Zwane from inside the box.

In the second half, Sundowns were largely in control without creating many chances themselves. However, they did their best at preventing the hosts from having any decent scoring opportunities to find an equaliser.

Pyramids had a late chance to share the spoils but a free header by Mohamed Hamdi from inside the box missed the target.

The win sees Downs move to seven points in Group A, while Pyramids stayed on four. Earlier on Tuesday, TP Mazembe beat FC Nouadhibou 2-0 to also climb to seven points from four games.

Tuesday’s results mean that Sundowns could potentially qualify for the knockout stages with another win on matchday five away at FC Nouadhibou in February.
