Ex-Downs Analyst – How Cardoso & Rulani Will Approach CAFCL Clash

Former Mamelodi Sundowns performance analyst Goolam Valodia has shared his views on how he thinks Miguel Cardoso and MC Alger mentor Rulani Mokwena will likely approach their crucial CAF Champions league encounter this coming weekend.

Sundowns and Alger meet in a deciding Group C clash on Valentine’s Day in Pretoria with a win for either side qualifying them for the knockout stage. The Algerian side is second in the group with seven points while the 2016 champions are third with six points both from five outings.

Valodia spent 15 years at Chloorkop and worked with the two coaches at different times and helped them win trophies before leaving Sundowns late last year.

The analyst spoke to iDiski Times senior journalist Matshelane Mamabolo saying Cardoso has to go all out in the fixture.

“I think he has no choice at the moment but to go all out,” Valodia told iDiski Times.

“He has to win to qualify for the next round. He may start out pragmatically but the longer the game stays at 0-0 the more the team will have to move into an all-out attack”.

A draw for Alger could be enough for them to progress and asked if that’s what Mokwena will aim for in his home country, Valodia said the coach has approached the tournament differently this time around.

“He has shown a different side of himself to what I know in the Champions League,” added the Portuguese.

“Not too caught up in trying to win playing very expansive football and focussing on the moments of the game and not getting caught up in the emotions of the game.”
