Former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani says Mamelodi Sundowns‘ goal in their CAF Champions League defeat to Pyramids was correctly awarded despite offside calls on Peter Shalulile.
The Brazilians suffered heartbreak at their chance of becoming the first South African team to win Africa’s elite club competition twice after going down 2-1 in the second leg and 3-2 on aggregate.
Miguel Cardoso’s charges found themselves 2-0 down after 60 minutes but Iqraam Rayners scored a consolation in the 75th minute but some felt the goal should not have stood claiming that Shalulile had been in an offside position.
‘The Principal’, speaking on Soccerzone, dissected the situation by applauding VAR as well as the match officials for following Law 11 in awarding the goal.
“The first line under Law 11 says, ‘It’s not an offence to be in an offside position’,” he said.
“Shalulile is behind and when you’re behind the player [Pyramid defender] can’t even see him and there’s no impact in that regard.
“The opponent cleared the ball, so there’s no challenge, there’s no impact from Shalulile.
“So, correct decision by VAR and the team for giving Sundowns a goal in this situation.”
