Khanye Makes Bold Cardoso Claim After CAFCL Loss

In the wake of Mamelodi Sundowns‘ 2025 CAF Champions League title defeat, iDiski TV analyst Junior Khanye has called on the club to part ways with Miguel Cardoso and re-instate Rulani Mokwena.

Mokwena led Sundowns to their seventh domestic league title last season but was shown the exit door just before the start of the recently concluded campaign, allegedly due to a broken relationship with management leaving Manqoba Mngqithi as the man in charge.

However, Mngqithi didn’t last too long as he was also fired in December last year for indifferent results in the Champions League and on the domestic front.

Cardoso then led the Brazilians to their eighth consecutive league title and the final of the Champions league for the first time in nine years. but the Portuguese lost the final tie 3-2 on aggregate to Pyramids FC after drawing the home leg 1-1 and losing 2-1 away in Cairo on Sunday.

The former Kaizer Chiefs winger believes that Cardoso should be released as he didn’t meet his target and would like to see Mokwena return to Chloorkop.

“If we can be honest, they signed him [Cardoso] because of the Champions League not because Rulani did anything wrong,” said Khanye on iDiski TV.

“So, they must get rid of him too. For me I’d go to Rulani and maybe he too can humble himself as he is a free agent, come back and focus on your coaching because you are so talented you are a genius.

“South Africa needs to hear me well on this one, with this guy it’s not only Sundowns that benefits but the whole nation. We got to the AFCON because of Sundowns, whether someone doesn’t believe this I don’t care because we are there because of Sundowns and Rhulani took out the best out of those players. Credit to Pitso [Mosimane] for bringing in Rhulani and Rhulani for applying himself.

“If you are asking me, I was going to get rid of him [Cardoso] because they brought him for the Champions League and how much have they spent on the likes of [Arthur] Sales and [Lucas] Suarez. I mean the coach has every type of player.”
