Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye says St Eloi Lupopo are a weak team and it showed in their defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League encounter on Saturday.
The Congolese side lost 3-1 to Sundowns in the Group C opener in Pretoria, a result coupled with the one in an alternative fixture in the group saw them at the bottom of the pool with no points. Meanwhile Sundowns top the group with three points.
Khanye insists Lupopo did not threaten Bafana ba style and it even questioned how they beat Orlando Pirates in the preliminary rounds.
“I know this team didn’t trouble Sundowns that much,” said Khanye on iDiski TV.
“This Lupopo team is a very weak team, I’ll be honest. I don’t even know how they beat Pirates at home. Honestly it’s a very weak team they don’t even have special players.
“I was talking to Nkululeko about Sundowns that every time they play it looked like they were going to score. They [Lupopo] were using wing-backs pushing them too high, that’s their starting point, pushing too high and leaving behind two center-backs.
“You will get exposed because you are going to get teams who do analysis, who might not be threatening in the first half but come back to punish you in the second half.
However, the iDiski TV analyst also believes Sundowns could have defended the goal they conceded against Lupopo better.
“The way this team scored, they stretched [Keanu] Cupido but he shouldn’t have been on the right,” he added.
“He should have defended on the left side, pressed that guy and maybe conceded a corner or have the ball go out.”
