Khune Makes Cardoso Claim

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has insisted that Miguel Cardoso has done “tremendously well” at Mamelodi Sundowns and deserves more credit.

Masandawana lost the second leg of the CAF Champions League final 2-1, and got beaten 3-2 on aggregate, with Pyramids FC lifting their first-ever continental title.

Meanwhile, Sundowns missed out on their second star which was the club’s big target for the 2024/25 campaign. Despite securing the Betway Premiership title in record-breaking manner, question marks have been raised over Cardoso’s future after Rulani Mokwena was sacked following a near-similar campaign.

However, Khune has put his weight behind the Sundowns coach, saying he has given the team a clear identity.

“To be fair to the coach he has brought identity to Sundowns,” he said on SABC3.

“And we can now see where Sundowns are heading to. They are also going to play Club World Cup, and they also stand a chance of doing well at the Club World Cup.

“But I think he has done tremendously well for the team.”

Khune also insisted that the players should not dwell too much on finishing second but rather be proud at their achievement in this year’s competition.

“They must hold their heads high and be proud that they are runners-up,” he stated.

“I still have the medal from being a runners-up, and whenever I look at it, I get so proud at myself that I contributed to Kaizer Chiefs going into the final of the CAF Champions League.

“So, they must be proud of themselves, and they must know we are proud as South Africans.”
