Late Goal Sees CRB Stun Al Ahly

CR Belouizdad scored a late goal to beat Al Ahly 1-0 in their CAF Champions League group stage game at the Stade du 5 Juillet 1962 in Algiers on Friday night.

Bafana Bafana striker Khanyisa Mayo started the game for the Algerians, while Percy Tau was on the bench for the Egyptian giants, and came on in stoppage time only.

A victory would have seen Al Ahly book their place in the knockout rounds with two games still to play, but while they had a few early chances, Belouizdad took control and created better opportunities, especially in the second half. It was a stark contrast from the match played in Egypt in December when Al Ahly won 6-1.

But while Mayo’s team were dominant, they could not take advantage until the dying minutes when Naoufel Khacef fired in from close range in the 90th minute.

It proved to be the winning goal, and keeps CRB in the race for a spot in the knockout stages.

Ahly remain top of Group C on seven points, while Belouizdad move up to second on six points, one ahead of Orlando Pirates, who play bottom-placed Stade D’Abidjan on Saturday.
