Having kept four clean sheets in the CAF Champions League group stages, Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has explained the importance of their first line of defence.
The CAF Champions League Group A log leaders have managed to keep four clean-sheets out of the four group games they have played.
Mngqithi told Thomas Mlambo on The Ultimate Sports Show that Sundowns’ first line of defence is striker Peter Shalulile, and he plays a key role.
“We have worked very hard in that space and I must thank my fellow coaches and the players themselves to change the mentality into a counter is very seriously strong counter attacking to counter pressing team, told The Ultimate Sports Show.
“The team that have high press when needs to be, and there is a very big improvement in that space. And that has helped us a lot because the reliance is not only on the goalkeepers and defenders,
“Peter [Shalulile] probably is one of our best defenders from the top because he makes it very difficult for the opponent to to easily see and find clear passes. He makes it very difficult for them, he is on the first line of defence.”
Mamelodi Sundowns will leave on Wednesday to Sudan as they will facing Al Hilal on match day five of CAF Champions League on Saturday afternoon.
