Mdunyelwa – Tactics In CAFCL Start Off The Pitch

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Zuko Mdunyelwa reckons it’s important for teams to not leave anything to fate in the CAF Champions League if they are to do well.

Sundowns are searching for their second star having been knocked out in the semi-finals in the last two editions.

The 2016 champions opened their 2024/25 account with a goalless draw against AS Maniema and sit in second position in Group B with a point behind leaders ASFAR who have maximum points after match-day 1.

Mdunyelwa spoke to Velile Mnyandu in edition 182 of the newspaper where he acknowledged that it’s the small margins that win games and therefore there needs to be a courageous approach if one wants to stay on course for the title.

“In the Champions League, games are won by small margins,” Mdunyelwa told iDiski Times.

“A team doesn’t need three chances to convert one chance; they actually need one chance to convert, and they will make it difficult for you.

“The tactics that are used in the Champions League start way off the field, things that some spectators or supporters will never see. From the hotels to the field, to the bus, the change rooms, the ball boys, the refs – everything matters.

“So, it is very important that when you are playing in the Champions League, you take control of your game. You have your fate in your own hands. You do not give it to someone else because you won’t make it out in the Champions League.”
