Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango has opened up about the club’s tradition of sharing all prize money among the squad, including the massive windfall from their recent CAF Champions League triumph.

The Brazilians secured the continental trophy last week after defeating AS FAR Rabat 2-1 on aggregate, earning a second star for their jersey.

The victory came with a staggering R102 million in prize money—an amount the club has reportedly handed over entirely to the players and technical staff, keeping only the trophy for the cabinet.

Onyango confirmed that “it’s true” they would be splitting the money. He noted that this is standard practice at Sundowns, adding that the exact same policy applies whenever they win the domestic league.

“It’s true, but it’s been like that at Sundowns for a very long time, even the league,” said Onyango during the interview with #MSW.

“Any trophy you win, you share the money, because we’re working for money. Isn’t?”

Meanwhile, Onyango is the second player at Downs to win the trophy twice along with Themba Zwane, with both players having been part of the team that won the first one in 2016.

“It’s very rare, it’s a very difficult journey, that’s why they are not too many,” he added.

“But thanks to the club, the players of the previous group that won the first one, the current group as well that has made it possible for me to have two.”
