Pitso Compares Chiefs To Downs In 2016
Pitso Mosimane has compared Kaizer Chiefs’ run in the CAF Champions League to when Mamelodi Sundowns won the competition after already being eliminated.
The Al Ahly coach was in charge of Masandawana in 2016 when they were knocked out in the preliminary rounds but were placed back in the tournament after AS Vita were disqualified for fielding an ineligible player.
Downs went on to lift their first ever CAF Champions League trophy after beating Zamalek 3-1 on aggregate in the final.
Mosimane now explained that the current Chiefs team, who are novices in the final, remind him of his side from 2016.
“When I think of novices, I remember my former team when we won it in 2016. We were the same novices, in fact we were already booted out of the tournament, we came back,” he told the On The Whistle podcast.
“What does that mean? It means anything is possible in football.
“Who rated Ukraine, we rated Denmark? We all looked at Portugal, we all looked at France, we all looked at Germany. We all looked at those big-name teams, we all looked at Spain.
“It was not to be. Italy came over, Denmark went to the semi-finals, Ukraine was in the quarters. So what does it mean for football?
“It tells me, if you can reach a cup final, you might as well win it. Same for both teams.”
Mosimane himself could win his third continental crown while Al Ahly are aiming to win their tenth CAF Champions League title.
