African Stars FC head coach Gerald Günther admits that they will have to respect South African champions Orlando Pirates, but not fear them.

It’s been less than a month since African Stars appointed Günther as their head coach on a two-year contract after the coach who led them to this round, Ronnie Kanalelo left the club to join Marumo Gallants.

The 46-year-old is familiar with Namibian football, as he has been in Namibian football for over 20 years, coaching several clubs within the country as well as the U17 national team. Pirates, though, will be his first test in the CAFCL second preliminary round first leg.

Speaking with New Era Live before leaving Namibia for Botswana, Günther explained that they should respect Pirates but not fear them; they must try make them uncomfortable at all times during the game.

“Preparation is going very well; the boys are working hard, the mindset is in the right place, and we did some positive work back in Windhoek, and we are currently continuing the work here,” Günther said.

“We can’t allow ourselves to be fearful; we need to respect the opponent, but definitely not show any fear.

“We need to make sure that we try and keep Pirates on their back foot, make them defend and make sure that we are organised in our defensive structure.”
