Ahead of the CAF Champions League final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Pyramids FC, one of Egypt’s most respected journalists, Hady Elmadany has offered a perspective of how the South Africa champions are rated in his country.
The clubs will meet over two legs, first in South Africa’s capital this weekend and again next weekend in Cairo for the coveted trophy and continental dominance.
Sundowns have won the competition in 2016 and have since been a force to be reckoned with in Africa and even won the inaugural African Football league last year. They have gone toe and toe with the likes of Al Ahly, who they eliminated from the tournament this season, as well as Zamalek and other African giants.
Elmadany, who is the Managing Editor of the biggest publication in Egypt, Yallakora, explained to iDiski Times senior journalist Lorenz Köhler in edition 205 of the newspaper that the Brazilians are feared and respected in Egypt.
“I think Sundowns, in the mind of Egyptian fans, Egyptian clubs, is one of the most feared clubs in Africa,” Elmadany told IDiski Times.
“It’s the most effective club to face Al Ahly, maybe in the 21st century or last decade, to be more exact. It’s a good team.
“People talk about Sundowns with respect, they see them as a professional club that are working on all details, good mentality, they have tactical discipline.
“They are a very good team, I would not say completely feared but respected.”
