Peter Shalulile’s first half-strike was cancelled out by Amin Zouhzouh’s late strike as Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a 1-1 draw by Far Rabat in their CAF Champions League tie at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday night.
The visitors had a great chance to take the lead as early as the seventh minute, but Tumisang Orebonye made mess of a cross after the Sundowns defence failed to clear the danger before Ronwen Williams collected.
In the 12th minute, Peter Shalulile gave Sundowns the lead from Lucas Ribeiro’s pin-point set-piece to head past Ayoub El Khayati and make it 1-0.
Shalulile almost got his brace in the 29th minute after connecting well with Thapelo Morena’s overhead cross but El Khayati dived low to make a save and keep his side in the match.
El Khayati was again called into action just two minutes later thwarting Grant Kekana’s close range shot.
Shalulile then tried a half volley in the 35th minute after a well-timed pass from Ribeiro but it landed safely in El Khayati’s hands.
In the 51st minute, Iqraam Rayners attempted an audacious chip, but El Khayati’s fingertip save saw it go out for a corner kick.
Rabat came inches close to the equalizer in the 67th minute from Zouhzouh’s cross with the crossbar coming to the rescue after Ribeiro almost scored an own goal.
When it looked like Sundowns had the match done and dusted, Zouhzouh beat Williams at the near post in the 83rd minute to send Rabat top of Group C with 10 points ahead of Sundowns on nine points.
