Sundowns Ladies Are African Champions!
Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies were crowned the inaugural Total Energies CAF Women’s Champions League champions after the 2-0 win over Hasaacas Ladies at the 30 June stadium in Cairo on Friday evening.
Sundowns went throughout the finals tournament in Cairo without conceding a goal.
Chuene Morifi netted in the 32ndminute from an Andisiwe Mgcoyi assist.
Morifi had a chance to extend the lead in the 41st minute but it went wide.
The Ghanaian champions had a shot to equalise through Doris Boaduwaa but Andile Dlamini dealt with it.
Jerry Tshabalala’side took a 1-0 lead into the break, when they came back in the second half Lelona Daweti shot wide in the 55th minute.
In the 64th minute Andisiwe Mgcoyi netted the winner. VAR confirming she was on-side before her neat finish.
Hasaacas had another chance to get back into the game with a free-kick in the 78th minute through Perpetual Agyekum and Andile made a fantastic save to deny them.
Sundowns had opportunities to extend their lead in the dying minutes, and in stoppage time Sundowns were reduced to ten men when after a VAR consultation Regina Mogolola was sent off for a bad foul.
But in the end 2-0 was enough for Jerry Tshabalala’s team to win the final.
Sundowns have become the first team to have won the CAF Champions League in both the men and women’s categories following the men’s victory in 2016.
