Sundowns Win Again At CAFWCL

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies have all but booked a place in the semi-finals of the inaugural Total Energies CAF Women’s Champions League, after winning 1-0 against Nigeria’s Rivers Angels on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day Kenya’s Vihiga Queens, who Sundowns beat in the opening round, bounced back with a 2-0 win over ASFAR, who had in turn beaten Angels 3-0.

Captain Zanele Nhlapo scored in the 17th minute after Angels had dominated most parts of the opening half.

Earlier in the half Asa Rabalao made a crucial save to deny the Nigerians a lead in the seventh minute and an equaliser in the 21st minute.

Sundowns had opportunities to extend their lead but Andisiwe Mcgoyi headed a Rhoda Mulaudzi cross over the bar. Mulaudzi herself had three clear chances to increase the score.

The win also essentially knocks Angels out of the competition as this is their second loss in a row in Group B, with only the top two sides in each group going to the knockouts.

The South African Champions had two scares in the second half, Rabalao saved Vivian Ikechukwu’s low strike four minutes into the half and Angels’ Demehin Oluwatosin ‘s handballed goal did not count.

Angels threw everything at Sundowns in the second half however it wasn’t to be for them, and Sundowns held on for their second win.

Sundowns play AS Des Far in the final game, with the group deciders to be played on Friday 12 November. A win or a draw will see them secure the group.

Sundowns are top of the group on 6 points, while Vihiga Queens and ASFAR are on 3 points, Angels are on 0.
