Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has insisted Brandon Petersen deserves a spot in the national team squad for the fine performances he’s been making this season.
Petersen, 31, has been one of the standout pillars, not just for Chiefs domestically this campaign, keeping 15 clean sheets in 23 games across all competitions.
On Sunday, the Amakhosi shot stopper again came up with several good saves to help his side beat ZESCO United in the CAF Confederation Cup and Khune hailed his performance, suggesting Hugo Broos should look at his predecessor in the Chiefs goal.
“I think players sometimes they tend to relax when goalkeepers making saves. Look at how important these saves were to keep another clean sheet,” he said on SABC1.
“He’s been very important throughout the season and I hope he will continue delivering such great performances so he can be called to Bafana because he’s one of the best we have in the country right now.”
Doctor Khumalo joined the praise of Petersen, saying Chiefs now need to be more focussed at defending set-pieces to continue to improve.
“We can say, the keeper can win you games. Remember, he’s the last line of defense, after him it’s the net. If you have a well-performing Petersen like this than clearly Chiefs is getting somewhere,” he added.
“They’ve dealt with… there are three phases or principles of play: defence, attack and transition. So, the defensive side is now only, how do we deal with dead-ball situations – do we have the right people that pick a striker who is very deadly when it comes to dead-ball situations…”
Chiefs return to action on Wednesday evening when they will face Stellenbosch FC in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32 at DHL Stadium.
