Orlando Pirates’ CAF Confederations Cup quarter-final opponents Simba SC have been punished by the Confederation of African Football, who found them guilty of performing hazardous rituals.

The Tanzanian giants were seen forming a huddle at the centre circle of Orlando Stadium ahead of their quarter-final second leg, with smoke appearing from the middle of the group ahead of the game.

Pirates had sent an official complaint over the antics of the visitors, while the match officials had also registered the behaviour in their match report.

“Simba SC players lit the fire in the center circle exactly at the starting point as they pretended to pray before the match started. We had to pour water on the fire to put it out before we could start the game,” Pirates argued as per CAF.

“Furthermore, Orlando Pirates club sent a complaint about the incident and the damage which occurred to the pitch. Photos and footage of the incident were also shared by CAF officials.”

After allowing Simba to share their side of the incident, CAF found the Tanzanian side guilty of performing hazardous rituals and slapped them with a R162 000 ($10 000) fine.

CAF’s statement reads: “After having heard the arguments of the parties concerned, analysed the videos and images in its possession, CAF Disciplinary Board has decided to impose the following sanctions for failure to comply and implement existing safety rules:

“• 10.000 USD (Ten Thousand US Dollars) for the performance of hazardous rituals by your players before the start of the match.

“Payment of 10.000 US Dollars must be made within 60 days of the date hereof.”

Simba have the chance to appeal the decision within three days.
