Simba Star Sakho Attracting Interest

Simba SC winger Pape Ousmane Sakho is starting to attract interest from across the continent and, after his display against Orlando Pirates, it’s easy to see why.

The Senegalese talent was roped in by the Liga Kuu Bara side in the off-season as a replacement for their previous talisman Luis Miquissone and he quickly established himself as a firm fan favourite.

Easy on the eye, blistering pace and the dribbling ability to ease past players, Sakho has further improved his reputation on the continent after already coming to the fore with his previous club Teungueth.

Senegal may be the reigning African champions with an embarrassment of talent for the national team but at club level, their teams have rarely made an impact in continental competitions in recent times.

But they made Africa stand up and take notice last season when they qualified for the group stage of the Champions League by knocking out Raja Atheltic Club in the final qualification stage.

Sakho was one of the standout players in that famous squad and naturally attracted the eyes of many suitors but it was Simba that moved quickly, mainly due to their immediate need to replace Al Ahly-bound Miquissone.

Replacing a player that had an impact on the Mozambique international comes with its pressure and the Diambars Academy graduate has taken it in his stride with important goals against RS Berkane and ASEC Mimosas that helped Simba qualify for the last-eight, as well as several Man of the Match displays in their quest to challenge Yanga for the league title this season.

Now barely one season into his stint in East Africa, the Diambars Academy graduate is seemingly destined for a higher level but it won’t be easy as a lucrative proposal has already been rebuffed by the player.

iDiski Times can reveal Al Hilal made contact with his representatives before the Confederation Cup knockout stages, but with bigger ambitions in mind – they were tuned down without hesitation, despite Simba being open to a potential move.

There have been murmurs in Senegal media that Sakho could even be called up to the national team by Aliou Cisse, with the Lions of Teranga preparing for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

His display against Pirates in the 1-0 win at the Benjamin Mkapa on Sunday showcased he’s not been affected by the recent adulation coming his way around the continent and another big performance in Johannesburg could potentially put him in the spotlight once again.

Irrespective of the result, it appears to 25-year-old is destined for stardom, whether it’s on the continent or further north of it – as one of the unique attacking talents on display that’s not only entertained crowds but shown effectiveness as a match-winner for Wekundu wa Msimbazi.
