Did Makhaula Avoid Red Card In Carling Final? Hlungwani Dissects

Former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani has applauded Akhona Makalima for correctly awarding a yellow card to Orlando Pirates midfielder Makhehleni Makhaula instead of a red in the Carling Knockout Cup final.

There was a huge uproar in the Marumo Gallants dugout and some section of the fans equally after Makhaula’s leg caught Ibrahim Bance on the upper body.

Hlungwani has since broken it down saying Makalima took the correct decision because the Buccaneers man avoided being sent off due to a reckless offence as opposed to excessive force.

“We have to differentiate between reckless and excessive force,” ‘The Principal’ said on Soccerzone.

“Look at it there, you’ll see the leg is bending. So, when the leg is bending like that, there’s no more excessive force for us to give a red card.

“So, it reduces to reckless tackle where a yellow card is sufficient because he is bending to say ‘I don’t want to kick him’.

“So, yellow card was sufficient for reckless tackle.”
