Former Kaizer Chiefs star Mandla Masango has explained how this season’s Orlando Pirates differ from the team they were last year.
Last season, under Spanish coach Jose Riveiro, the Buccaneers were once again chasing Mamelodi Sundowns in the Betway Premiership, just as they had in previous campaigns.
They lifted the MTN8 trophy early in the 2024/25 season and went on to finish second in the league, with Riveiro departing at the end of the campaign.
Now, under new coach Ouaddou, Pirates have already defended their MTN8 title and stand on the brink of another cup final, as they prepare to face Richards Bay in the Carling Knockout Cup semi-final.
Masango says the Sea Robbers have improved their squad depth, having signed more quality players before the start of the season.
He believes the increased competition within the team has made it easier for them to maintain consistency, as one quality player can easily replace another.
“Pirates at the moment, they are the best team in the country, we shouldn’t take that away from them,” Masango told iDiski Times.
“They have the quality and the depth. The quality players they have are incredible because you take off this one, you bring on this one, it’s the same.
“I think last season they were lacking more of this and the depth because one player would get injured and now, they are struggling.
“But now you can see they are well balanced and there’s so much competition in each and every position.”
