‘R100k Should Be Standard MOTM Prize Money’

Sekhukhune United coach Brandon Truter has applauded the sponsors of the Carling Knockout Cup for the R100 000 prize money saying it should be the standard even in the League going forward.

United’s Jammie Webber was the fans’ man of the match as Ba Bina Noko defeated Royal AM 1-0 in the last 16 clash at the Peter Mokaba stadium on Saturday.

The coach says not only is the money motivational but also considerate of the length of a football career. Truter also says the money is just as competitive with other sporting codes such as rugby emphasising that such amounts should be standard even for footballers.

“You know what people don’t know [is that] Carling Cup with the other sponsor the Castle Lager is sponsoring rugby R80k, R50k for man of the match in rugby matches every week,” said Truter after the match.

“So this is something new for football and I think it’s about time that the sponsors put this kind of money for our boys in terms of having a short career and taking it match in match out and putting your livelihood on the line.

“So I don’t see anything wrong with it, yes it’s motivating for them extra incentive but if rugby is doing it on a weekly basis – what’s R5000 for man of the match on a weekly basis compared to rugby?

“So thank you to Carling Cup for minimizing that gap and hopefully it will stay that way – in the near future in the league as well.”
