Stellies Into CKO Semi-Final

Stellenbosch FC booked their place in the semi-finals of the Carling Knockout Cup after a 2-0 victory over Polokwane City in the quarterfinal, at the old Peter Mokaba stadium on Friday evening.

The visitors broke the deadlock as early the seventh minute through Iqraam Rayners from a Jayden Adams assist. Devin Titus doubled the lead in the 15th minute after goalkeeper Sage Stephens assisted him from his own goal.

Earlier before the second goal the hosts lost their captain Bulelalni Nkani to injury. City had a chance to pull one back in the 17th minute from a Langelihle Ndlovu powerful shot but it was deflected out.

There was another chance for Rise and Shine to get back into the game in the 38th minute. They won a set-piece after Thabang Matuludi was fouled and Oswin Appollis stepped up but shot over the bar leaving Stellies in the lead at halftime.

Stellies could have made it 3-0 at the start of the second half through Titus but that attempt was dealt with by the City goalkeeper. In the 59th minute Rayners cut through the City defense to find Kgaogelo Sekgota who had the keeper to beat but his attempt was cleared by Manuel Sapunga.

Stellies got a corner kick as a result which Sihle Nduli and Genino Palace couldn’t make count. Three minutes later the Limpopo side had another shot to reduce the deficit through Appollis from the top corner but Stephens made a super save.

City kept the tempo as they continued their search for a goal, they were awarded a corner with 10 minutes left on the click. Appollis found Rodney Maphangule but the latter headed wide.

This is Stellies third appearance in a cup semi-final in six months, after the Nedbank Cup last season and the MTN 8 earlier this season. Meanwhile City were without head coach Lehlohonolo Seema who is away following the passing of his father.

Rayners walked away with his second successive Man of the Match award in the competition, bagging his second R100,000 in prize money.
