Kaizer Chiefs completed a double over Orlando Pirates, with a 1-0 win to secure their spot at the top of the DStv Diski Challenge league table.
The electrifying atmosphere at the Dr Molemela Stadium with the Soweto derby closing the festival. Chiefs created numerous chances inside the first five minutes with Siphesihle Tati hitting the upright. Thulani Mabasa also had a shot from range but Pirates keeper Bayanda Zulu made a good save.
In the 24th minute, Chiefs awarded a penalty after Pirates defender Mmatlou Sepale brought down Imaad Hendricks as he was through on goal, referee Moses Kheswa pointed to the spot and sent Sepale off. Aiden McCarthy stepped up but he was denied by Zulu and the scoreline remained 0-0.
The Buccaneers held on for the first 45 minutes going to the break with 10-man and the score at 0-0. Chiefs dominated the game but failed to change that into chances created and goals.
But they came back with the same intensity trying to get the opening goal of the game, and in the 67th minute, Pirates defender Moses Mphekgoane gave away the second penalty of the game, fouling Hendricks.
McCarthy stepped up for the second time and this time he beat Zulu to make it 1-0.
The win moves Chiefs back into the top position, on 51 points after 21 games, one point ahead of Stellenbosch, who have played one more game than the Amakhosi.
