Polokwane City handed Orlando Pirates their first defeat of the season on a hot afternoon in Limpopo, while Mamelodi Sundowns moved to the top of the log after a late winner against TS Galaxy.
Sundowns came to the game with a pressure of getting maximum points, so that they could close the gap at the top. TS Galaxy, though, opened the scoring in the 29th minute through Taye Marks.
But it didn’t take long for Sundowns to equalise, with Bennet Mokoena scoring his sixth goal of the campaign. Right after the break, Sundowns went ahead with Siyabonga Mabena scoring the second goal to make it 2-1.
In the 58th minute, Sundowns defence committed an error, and Nguessan Corneille punished them to make 2-2. But with two minutes remaining from normal time Sundowns restored the lead and that was a winner from Kabelo Sibande.
Pirates played with Polokwane City knowing very well they needed at least a point to go back above Sundowns. But Rise and Shine said ‘not under my watch’ as Monty Bahlabane unleashed a long range to beat the goalkeeper.
After piling pressure, Pirates finally got rewarded through a beautiful free-kick from Siphiwe Msilela to level matters. The Buccaneers pushed for the second and a possible winning goal, leaving gaps at the back and they were punished by Khololwethu Simiko who made 2-1 with three minutes remaining from normal time.
It was the first defeat of the season for Pirates after they had won six games in a row.
