‘Worried’ Makhanya Opens Up On Soweto Derby Loss

Orlando Pirates DStv Diski Challenge head coach Joseph Makhanya has admitted he is worried about his side’s title chances after losing the Soweto Derby and failing to collect maximum points for the third successive weekend.

Pirates suffered their fifth league defeat of the season and their second in a space of three games, going down 2-0 to Amakhosi on Sunday.

The young Sea Robbers suffered a shocking defeat three weeks ago against Cape Town Spurs in Cape Town before playing to a goalless draw with TS Galaxy at Rand Stadium.

Makhanya’s side spent most of the season sitting at the top of the log, but have now dropped eight points behind Mamelodi Sundowns with just seven games to go.

“I’m a worried coach because it’s our third game [and] again we didn’t collect maximum points,” Makhanya told SuperSport TV.

“We have to regroup very quick as much as these are young kids, we still try to teach them a bit of consistency and continuity, making sure that they don’t lose themselves towards the process of challenging for certain things.

“Normally we lose ourselves around that period whereby we start chasing over the results without going through the process, we skip the process we want the results, which is something that we try to drill it this season so unfortunately this time around it slipped again but seven games to go.

“We will try to recuperate and work on certain things that we need to work on.”

Pirates next face seventh-placed Sekhukhune United on Saturday, while leaders Sundowns have a top-of-the-table clash against Stellenbosch FC.
