Barker Hails Rayners After Five-Goal Show

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker praised his five-goal hero Iqraam Rayners in their victory over Polokwane City, hailing Saturday as a momentous day for the club.

Earlier in the day the club announced their official acquisition of a women’s team, as they took over the Sasol League franchise of Stellenbosch University.

The day was then capped off with Rayners’ performance as he ran riot against Polokwane, as the second-placed team continued their 24-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

“Obviously a massive day for the club in terms of our ladies playing their first official game as Stellenbosch Football Club, so a momentous occasion for the club,” Barker said at the post match press conference.

“Now to cap it off with a five goal victory was really special. So I thought we dominated the majority of the game. First half, I thought we were in total control.

“And second half, they came out in the first 10/15 minutes, we were a little bit under pressure. Sometimes when somebody scores five goals, maybe the focus is just on Ikkie [Rayners], but I thought the double save from Sage Stephens to keep it at 1-0, was really a pivotal point in the game, because from there we went and scored the second. I think that took the wind out of the sails a bit.

“And then yeah, then obviously, the last 25/30 minutes was some really special moments and special play. And the team is just continuing to play with a lot of maturity, a lot of quality, and it’s almost like they’re playing as if they believe where they are is where they should be.

“And so ja, really, really proud of the performance. What can one say? I thought it was five special goals. Sometimes it’s when you score five goals, maybe one or two, but I thought everyone was well thought, well-struck, composed, quality finishes. For me, I think obviously Ikkie’s gone to the top goal scorer in the league, and for me, he is definitely playing himself into contention for player of the season.

“And today he showed his qualities as a goalscorer. So all in all, very proud day for the club.”

“He’s got pace, he’s got a clean strike, that first goal showed that ability and he he’s got good technique,” Barker continued about Rayners’ qualities.

“Even when he used to play in wide areas his crossing is really good. His striking the ball is really good. You can even see when it comes on to his left foot, he’s able to change play, play right to left and get people like Fawaaz into the play.

“So his goal that he scored coming on the left foot, that strike, so technically very good. Composed, confident right now, technically, and makes the right decisions.

“I think a lot of goal-scorers it is about decision making. And Ikkie makes really good decisions, more than many strikers that I know.”
