Chiefs Score Late To Win Soweto Derby

Kaizer Chiefs scored a late goal to beat Moroka Swallows in Sunday’s Soweto Derby clash at Dobsonville Stadium.

In an uncomfortable 36 degree heat for those who came out to the Soweto Derby, it looked for a long time like neither side managed to ovecome the circumstances in a rather subdued display.

Despite seeing some end to end play at times, it lacked technical quality and notably intensity and both sides were forced into two water breaks.

A much-changed Chiefs side, which saw Bruce Bvuma make his first start of the season could be happy with their defensive improvement, but it was clear the interim coach Cavin Johnson and his successor at Naturena has their work cut out for them.

The host of new signings has always shown individual quality, but the teamwork and spirt, that Swallow clearly possess is lacking.

While clear-cut chances were rare over the 90 minutes, a moment of brilliance by Yusuf Maart, who set up Christian Saile decided the game in the 82nd minute.

Johnson has now overseen four games in charge of Chiefs, with two defeats against Golden Arrows and Orlando Pirates, a win over Cape Town Spurs and the win over Swallows.

It saw his side climb into sixth place on the log with 17 points from 13 matches, while Swallows stayed in fifth, one spot above their Soweto rivals.
