‘Chippa Too Reliant On Ighodaro’

Chippa United coach Kurt Lentjies says he needs to find solutions to not be over-reliant on striker in-form striker Etiosa Ighodaro.

Despite Chippa’s precarious log position in 13th with 25 points and being four points off the relegation/promotion playoff spot, the 21-year-old is the joint third top goal scorer in the DStv Premiership with eight goals.

Lentjies says Ighodaro is a quality striker and the number of goals he has scored aren’t by fluke, however, the club needs to find a way to take the load off him.

“Definitely he is a quality striker to single him out. I don’t like to talk about individuals but you know he’s a quality striker. He hasn’t scored eight goals as a fluke,” Lentjies said.

“And I think he will continue scoring in the next seven games as well but my concern is just we are too reliant on him you understand.

“So we need to find another way, another combination just to take that load off him and once the load is off him, I think he will play freely as well and score more goals. But we need other guys to chip in as well.”

The fight to retain their top-flight status is on once again for Lentjies, who steered them to safety last season and feels the squad spirit is helping them in the battle.

“For me, it’s all about togetherness. We need to fight and work towards what we want to achieve which is obviously safety,” he added.

“We are also looking up to the sky because there is a possibility. The league is very tight for us to sneak into the top eight but that’s obviously going to require consistency from our point of view.”
