Do Chiefs Need A New Striker In January? Johnson Responds

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson has responded to questions whether Amakhosi need to buy another striker in January.

Amakhosi finished 2023 with a 1-1 draw with Sekhukhune United, ending in sixth place in the DStv Premiership log.

They have collected 10 points in their last four games, but have only scored more than one goal in eight out of their last nine matches, with midfielder Edson Castillo currently the club’s top goalscorer on five goals.

But despite the likes of Christian Saile, Ranga Chivaviro, who needed the equaliser on Saturday, and Jasond Gonzalez all struggling to find the back of the net, Johnson insisted he will not go into the market for a new striker.

“Everybody is going to ask me that questions (laughs). Ranga scores today, Gonzalez tries his best,” he told journalists.

“The 10 points we got and you look at where the goals are coming from, they are coming from allover the place. I always say it doesn’t matter where they goals are coming from, as long as they come.

“If you look at how we scored, how Mmodi scored his goals, how Mshini scored his goal, it’s because of the movement of the strikers.

“So the striker might not score the goals but he does the movement, and when he does do the movement and the other person scores, for me it’s a plus.

“So no, I don’t think I’m going to try and find a striker. I think I’m going to try to make these players better. I hope I can.”
