Doc Rips Into Chiefs Players After Club’s Worst-Ever Finish

After Kaizer Chiefs recorded their worst-ever finish in the DStv Premiership this past weekend, club legend Doctor Khumalo has since ripped into the players accusing them of lacking personality.

Amakhosi finished the 2023/24 campaign in 10th place, suffering a shock 2-0 defeat at the hands of already-relegated Cape Town Spurs at the DHL Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

This was the second time in the club’s history that they’ve finished outside the top eight after they suffered a similar fate in May 2019, when they ended in ninth position. This also meant that they will miss out on participating in the MTN8 competition when the new season gets underway.

“Personality determines if you’re a winner,” Khumalo said on SABC Sport’s Soccer Zone.

“Why I choose personality, at Kaizer Chiefs when you look at the Chairman [Kaizer Motaung Snr] his personality speaks its volume. How the club is run. The personality of how the club is run.

“A coach that comes, can’t be a twinsaver. Kaizer Chiefs has always maintained a coach that has arrogance.

“That players need to understand that this is Kaizer Chiefs that has supporters that are used to a culture of trophies.

“When I signed, I signed when there were 12-14 top players, and I was made to be part of that. They marshaled me to join, but they were building a personality.

“There is no ways you go face your opponents they don’t feel you. That’s a loss on its own. When the opponents look at the bench, they don’t feel it.

“I’m not taking away anything from anybody that’s there now, but Kaizer Chiefs is a team of personality.”

The former Bafana Bafana midfield maestro also seemed to direct his displeasure at the club regarding certain factors that have put them on the back foot.

“Decision-making – it’s very key, player acquisition – it’s very key. We don’t just pay because he’s done that at that club. That has been proven before that a player can play well at Stellies, but that doesn’t mean he can play well at Chiefs.

“It needs a guidance in terms of how do we get the personality, not the players! Chiefs needs a player with a personality. Someone who will deal with pressure of the jersey and pressure of the stadium because wherever they lay their head, that’s their home.

“What I’m trying to say, any stadium they go to you’ll find their supporters. Now, you can’t make a mistake [and] no player comes to you and wreckle you. It’s like it’s something that’s happened. It’s impossible. You can see personality, it’s not their coach you know.

“Thabang Lebese made a mistake and [Neil] Tovey grabbed him, ‘hey we need this sani [son]’. But mistakes are being done on the field nothing’s happening no. It’s always like it’s fine. Players are controlling on the bench.

“There’s so much that has gone wrong, but I’d like to believe there’s still ample time to fix it. Because there are things that happened that never happened for centuries.”

When quizzed about how the club and equally the players need to fix the wrongs that have transpired this long, Khumalo cheekily responded, “How did they spoil it? Because you spoil it in order for you to fix it.

“Because I’m not telling something that no one doesn’t see it, it’s there.”

This season-end marks exactly nine years since Chiefs last won a major trophy. They won the league and Nedbank Cup during the 2014/15 season under Swedish coach Stuart Baxter.
