Johnson Defends Maart’s Leadership

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson has come to the defence of Yusuf Maart, who has been captaining the Amakhosi team of late.

Certain sectors of Chiefs’ supporters have been critical of Maart of late, but Johnson has leapt to the defence of the 28-year-old midfielder.

Speaking after the 3-2 defeat to Orlando Pirates on Saturday, Johnson responded to a question on Maart’s role, and said the technical appreciated his overall contribution.

“On Yusuf, Yusuf’s been the captain now for last eight games, we’ve only conceded one goal,” Johnson responded in the post match press conference.

“So he’s done a good job as far as keeping his troops together on the pitch and going forward with him.

“And maybe he doesn’t look like he’s a flair player or a ‘good player’ from outside.

But as a technical team, we appreciate his contribution to the team, and I’m sure if we were leading or winning the games by more goals, then maybe we wouldn’t be talking this way.

“But I think he does a good job for the team. And ja, we’re happy with these performances.”
