Johnson Questions Ref After Downs Hammering

Kaizer Chiefs caretaker coach Cavin Johnson was not happy with referee Abongile Tom over an incident before Mamelodi Sundowns’ first goal in their 5-1 hammering.

Johnson saw his side go down to 10 men in the first half after Given Msimango brought down Lucas Ribeiro Costa as last man – with Johnson saying he still needs to look at the incident again.

However, he wasn’t happy with Tom over a situation before Sundowns scored the first of their five goals.

“Well done to Sundowns, I think they win the league tonight,” he told journalists.

“But in saying that, I think the red card spoilt my game in one moment. I don’t know if it was a red card, I still have to look at it.

“But we held them like we should’ve held them in the first half – 0-0 in the first half with 10 men. We had good structure, good moments in the game as well.

“But we came out and we thought if carry on in this vein we could take them down, and maybe get a goal.

“But in saying that, their first goal is actually a foul for us. There is a foul on the right-hand side exactly by me, and he points the other way.

“From that moment they go and score. That really breaks your players as well. That is like the achilles heel he takes out on us. We’re 10 men down and the actual foul is on Kaizer Chiefs and after that it’s just snowball effect.

“But in saying that I thought we had to defend better in the second half, which we didn’t do. But my main point of contention is that the first goal scored against us is not necessary what I expect – but we’re not even going to complain about all those things.

“They win the game, we lose the game. We have to go back to the drawing board and there’s four games left and we have to really put up our socks because the Chiefs that you saw in the last 15 minutes is not the Chiefs I know.”

Despite the 5-1 hammering, Chiefs stayed in eighth place on 33 points with four games left to play.
