McCarthy Recalls Scara Magic & Most Memorable Chiefs Game

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Fabian McCarthy has shared his most memorable game in Amakhosi colours and also recalled the magic of Emmanuel ‘Scara’ Ngobese.

McCarthy featured for Chiefs between 2003 and 2008 and was part of the legendary Amakhosi defence that set a new defensive record in the PSL, conceding only 11 goals in the 2004/05 season.

He’s also featured in multiple Soweto Derbies and ahead of this week’s showpiece, he recalled his own experiences with iDiski Times.

“It’s the biggest game in the South African football calendar when you factor in the build-up to the game and also always a sold-out affair when it comes to the match tickets,” he stated.

McCarthy then went on to recall a historic 4-3 win against Bush Bucks as one of his own most memorable Chiefs games.

“My most memorable game from my Chiefs days, I recall a night game in Gqeberha at the old Telkom Park Stadium. We played against Bush Bucks as we were chasing the league title and this is the season when we were 11 points behind Pirates,” he explained.

“We were 3-1 down but we came back to win that game 4-3 with the late John ‘Shoes’ Moshoeu, Collins Mbesuma (a brace) and David Radebe scoring the winning goals.”

McCarthy then recalled another historical game when the late Scara Ngobese netted a brace against Pitso Mosimane’s SuperSport United.

“There was another night game at Loftus Versfeld Stadium against SuperSport United, that’s where we saw the individual brilliance and skill of the late Scara Ngobese, who scored with a sole movement after dribbling Phil Evans and scored a late winning goal,” he added.
