Middendorp Slams Swallows And Calls For PSL Intervention

Cape Town Spurs coach Ernst Middendorp says he wasn’t surprised to read about Moroka Swallows’ financial problems after he spent a few months at the club, and has called for PSL board to intervene.

A week ago, Swallows made the headlines after two of their last 2023 fixtures were postponed due to unpaid salaries. This wasn’t the first time they made headlines regarding this as financial issues also happened under the leadership of Dylan Kerr.

The German mentor, who had a short intermezzo at Swallows between December 2022 and March 2023, went hard on Swallows and stated that he was not surprised by the latest issues. He also called for the Premier Soccer League board of executive members to intervene.

“I had guests from Bundesliga 2 clubs, they asked what’s this they were reading about it because they have a home in Camps Bay, it’s absolutely unbelievable, it’s not possible. For me it’s very clear if the executive committee are not stepping in and make it very clear, you cannot,” Middendorp told the media.

“You have an obligation, as a club you get paid for it to pay the players, to use the money for the right things. There’s only one way done, you are not having the right to stay in the league, and you’re not having the right anymore to be part of PSL league.

“This is my personal opinion, you asked me as a human being with a passport from Germany – forget about my position [as Spurs coach].

“Let’s not talk. I left the club in March and now it’s already November. Every club should do it, sign players for God’s sake, play three months make 25 points then you don’t pay, and everything is fine you have your 25 points.

“You get rid of the expensive players, what I heard already that is what they are doing, Mabasa to AmaZulu there’s a lot happening behind the scenes, everybody gets the money and everybody is happy.

“[Then] every club should do it and pay this R6 Million per month payments but you have only R2 Million available, just do it, make your points and then the rest of five, six months. This is something absolutely [shocking] if the board of governors is not stepping in.”
