Mokwena On Sundowns Stars’ Awards Snubs

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has been left disappointed after Lucas Ribeiro Costa was omitted from the annual Premier Soccer League award nominations.

The 25-year-old Brazilian forward joined the club in the off-season from Belgian outfit Beveren and emerged as a key part of Mokwena’s starting line-up.

With 16 goals and eight assists in 36 games across all competitions, he was mooted as a potential Football of the Season contender.

However, Mokwena admits that injuries were likely the cause of him not featuring more and showing the quality he really has to be amongst the nominees that feature teammates Teboho Mokoena, Ronwen Williams and Stellenbosch forward Iqraam Rayners.

“Of course I’m disappointed I think he’s been phenomenal, I think he’s just been unlucky with injuries, he hasn’t played so many games in his career and that caught up a little but with him, but phenomenal footballer and phenomenal human being,” Mokwena said.

“He’s one of the best players I’ve coached, really from a gifted perspective and still a player that I still think can improve so much more, and that’s probably an even scarier thought that in his first season with what he’s done and performed…

“I could say the same about Marcelo Allende – it’s disappointing also to not see him amongst the nominees, you know, I think Sailor had a good season also, he’s not part of the Defenders [of the Season nominees] at the very least. But okay, you can’t have your cake and eat it, can you?

“You have to celebrate the nominations of Ronwen, the nominations of Scara [Nkosi], who I think was superb with the Diski especially, the nominations of Tebza [Mokoena] and mine, I’m just nominated because I coach such very good players. I’m just humbled to be in that space.”
