Mokwena Targets Pitso Record

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena is targetting a new Premier Soccer League record with an unbeaten league-winning season on the cards, and the chance of beating Pitso Mosimane’s 71 points.

Sundowns secured a seventh consecutive DStv Premiership title with the 5-1 drubbing over Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Thursday evening.

After being knocked out of the CAF Champions League semi-final by Esperance Sportive de Tunis, it was a much-needed bounce-back result ahead of their Nedbank Cup last-four tie against Stellenbosch in the Western Cape on Sunday and the rest of the season.

Masandawana could finish on 80 points, if they win their remaining six games which would smash the record held by Sundowns, when Pitso Mosimane reached 71 points eight years ago.

“Men plan but God decides. So this is where we are, football is about winning, drawing or losing, so you enter the last couple of games with that. I’m happy to see that we’re playing more without the fear of losing,” he said about the unbeaten run and record.

“We went through a period where our performances were based on not losing games, we had to remind the players, we got this far, playing to win games, and I’m happy to see there’s a bit of a shift of that in the last four or fives games, the mentality has shifted.

“The 71 points why not? Why not go for it? It’s there if you get it kudos – if you don’t get it unlucky and you try again next time.

“Why not go for the next target, every mountain is there to be attempted to climbed and the moment you climb one mountain, you know what I always say about successful people and what I say about success, has the same clues and then they look for another mountain to climb.

“So, why not go for 71 points and break that [record] because last season we got to 70, so it’s possible, why not.”

Sundowns have Golden Arrows, two games against Royal AM, Stellenbosch, TS Galaxy and Cape Town City to end their league campaign.
