Moloisane Explains Brave Call To Leave Downs

Stellenbosch defender Thabo Moloisane has opened up about his time at Mamelodi Sundowns and the decision to leave to take a chance on himself.

The 25-year-old, who has just been called to up to Bafana Bafana’s provisional squad, spent most of his youth at Chloorkop between 2013 and 2020 and even played in the side’s DStv Diski Challenge side with the likes of Percy Tau, the late Motjeka Madisha and Siphelele Mkhulise.

He also got the opportunity to play for the national U20 side that went to the World Cup with Thabo Senong. Moloisane is now part of the Stellies team that is enjoying one of their best seasons yet in the PSL with 34 appearances in all competitions and one goal and an assist under his belt.

He spoke to iDiski Times writer Sinethemba Makonco in the latest edition of the newspaper, where he explained his journey from South Africa’s capital to putting the Harry Gwala Stadium reputation of being able to bring out the best in players to the test.

“So my contract with Sundowns was finished, and there were talks about being renewed, but I decided not to renew it,” Moloisane told iDiski Times.

“I just thought, ‘Let me take a chance’, bet on myself and see what can happen. Luckily, Maritzburg United was watching the playoffs. And I was doing really well in the playoffs. And there was interest from Maritzburg United and Moroka Swallows at the time”.

“But I chose to sign for Maritzburg. Mainly because growing up, there is a vibe that has been spoken about at Harry Gwala and I thought from a boy that is from the hood, I’ve always played around with these spectators and this is a stadium that used to be known for having a good environment and the team produced a lot of top players that are in big teams now.”
