Pirates Give Squad Update Ahead Of Must-Win Clash

Orlando Pirates have given a squad update ahead of their final DStv Premiership match of the 2023/24 season, which is crucial for the Buccaneers to potential qualify for the CAF Champions League.

Pirates need to at least draw with SuperSport United and hope Stellenbosch FC will lose to Richards Bay in order for them to overtake Stellies on the log.

However, they will have to do so without centre-back pairing Tapelo Xoki, who is ruled out with injury, and the suspended Nkosinathi Sibisi.

“Pirates meanwhile have suffered some significant blows in defence with Tapelo Xoki’s injury forcing him out of the remainder of the season, while Nkosinathi Sibisi is suspended for one match after he was cautioned in Mbombela,” the club confirmed.

“They could be boosted in midfield as Miguel Timm nears a return to action after picking up a minor knock in the lead up to the trip to Mpumalanga.”

Meanwhile, assistant coach Sergio Almenara has urged his side to improve on their recent performances in order to keep the three points at Orlando Stadium.

“This is the last game of the season, we’re trying on the game and face the game working hard and working as good as possible to get the three points, which is the only target,” he stated.

“It’s important that it’s the last game and we’re coming from two bad results, our performance grows [improves] much better than the last game and we perform in a way that it’s possible to get the three points.”

Pirates are third with 49 points, while Gavin Hunt’s men sit in fifth with 43 and could themselves still leapfrog TS Galaxy, who have 44 points, on the log – but they would need to beat the Buccaneers at their own home ground.
