PSL Star Ends 2023 Among World’s Top Scorers

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile has ended 2023 among the world’s top goal scorers, sitting above the likes of Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski.

Shalulile, 30, finished the 2022/23 DStv Premiership campaign as joint-top goalscorer along with Khanyisa Myo, with both netting 12 times.

Six of Shalulile’s goals came in 2023, while he also scored five in the Nedbank Cup and another six in the CAF Champions League in the second half 2022/23.

This season, he’s scored four goals in the league so far, two in the CAF Champions League, two in the MTN8 and one in the African Football League.

With Namibia he netted three goals in 2023, all of them coming in the qualification for the African Cup of Nations.

Overall, Shalulile finished the year on 29 goals for club and country, beating the likes of Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski and Antoine Griezmann, who all netted 28 goals in 2023.

As a consequence, the Downs striker ended up in joint-45th position among the world’s top goal scorers, according to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS).

The ranking was won by Cristiano Ronaldo, who netted an incredible 54 goals in 23. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is followed by Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane, who both netted 52, while Erling Haaland ended the year on 50 strikes.

Shalulile could’ve scored even more goals in 2023, but he was set back by injuries, with more chances to write his name into football’s history books coming in 2024.
