Riveiro Addresses Sibisi Red Card & Ref Controversies

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro says he knows what happened in the discussion between Nkosinathi Sibisi and the official that got him sent off, but insisted his players must remain focussed despite being disadvantaged by referees.

Sibisi was sent off in injury-time of Pirates’ 1-1 Soweto Derby draw with Moroka Swallows after using alleged foul language towards the match official.

After the match Riveiro discussed the incident, saying he knows what happened and pointing towards a general trend of Pirates – who had a goal ruled out for offside and a potential penalty not given – have been disadvantaged by referees.

“I know what happened but I cannot tell you the terms [content] of the conversation between the first official and my player,” Riveiro told media after the match.

“But again it’s a situation of a clear disadvantage when you have a conversation with the referee because you don’t decide the terms and it’s exactly what happened in that conversation.

“Like I said my players must be focussing on playing football – I know that sometimes it’s difficult, even for myself but there is nothing for us with the referees, there is nothing that we will [change].

“Obviously in the last eight, this game number eight that we are really, really ‘unlucky’ with some [decisions]. It’s not one or two, hey, this is the number eight.

“But yeah, more than ever we have to be focussed and not lose concentration because like you see one of moment that we lost concentration, we are losing one player now for at least two games.

“There is no reward for us in that space.”

The Pirates coach also insisted that his players must remain focussed because they cannot control the decisions of the referees.

“The referees are not camping with us, they are not training with us during the week,” he stated.

“Our energy must be for them play football, for me to help them play good football and then luckily we have the journalists to analyse, to find conclusions, to maybe put some light.

“You have your job, we have our job. Our job is entertain the people, play good football, try to get three points in each and every game.”
