Riveiro – Pirates Not Giving Up On Champions League

Having moved to within one point of second-placed Stellenbosch, Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has said their target remains to finish in second and earn a CAF Champions League spot.

Pirates have already qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup after reaching the Nedbank Cup final, but are currently third in the DStv Premiership, just behind Steve Barker’s team.

Riveiro says that they are looking to continue putting pressure on Stellies in the three remaining league games, but understands that currently, Stellenbosch are in control of their own fate.

“Stellies are still ahead of us, one point, that’s the reality, they’re still depending on their own performances and results,” Riveiro said.

“We have to continue putting pressure and pushing as much as we can in order to to do our own homework. It’s going to be difficult for all of us until the end, tight games for sure. But at the same time, it’s a nice fight, Stellies are doing an excellent season, whatever happens in the end of the season for them, it is an exceptional campaign.

“So we’re gonna try to get, it’s our second objective obviously, but it’s the highest position that we can achieve right now and we’re gonna give our all, being solid, not conceding, it is a big thing for our team with a capacity that we have in attack. It’s difficult to keep a clean sheet against us as well, so guaranteed that we are not conceding usually means that we’re gonna get the three points.

“I think we are right now second in the log scoring goals behind Sundowns, very close, so if  give this consistency in defence, not giving away any goal, not not even conceding, I think we are defending very well, not giving opportunities to the opponents to score and keeping the ball.”

Riveiro said it’s going to be a tough run, but they are targeting the nine points to have a better finish than they did last season.

“It’s gonna be difficult because Richards Bay is coming  (just in two days) and with the results with Cape Town Spurs getting the victory, the situation in the bottom is getting tight,” he continued.

“So they will come here desperately to try to collect points. Then we have to go to Mbombela to play Galaxy, which if I’m not mistaken. I think is the second-best team in the league at home. I don’t know if playing with us right now after today’s victory, but somewhere that is a very strong team in the home games and we finish the league here with SuperSport, which is always a difficult fight.

“But yeah, the target is to get more points than the last season. Last season, we got 54, we can get 58 if I’m not mistaken so that’s the objective to get more than what we did one year ago and hopefully, we managed to get that amount of points. We can also get the second position but like I said it is not depending on us only, we depend on the results of Stellenbosch, but our part is to collect that amount. Make sure that we can get the 58.”
