Riveiro Salivating At Squad Depth In Goalies

The strength in depth in the Orlando Pirates squad enthuses coach Jose Riveiro, who said everyone is ready to deliver.

The Spanish coach, whose side won two trophies last season, also spoke of the important aspect of the modern game, having a goalie that is comfortable on the ball.

Sipho Chaine, who finished strongly last term and was in goals when Pirates beat Sekhukhune United in the Nedbank Cup, has been preferred in goals by Riveiro in the first two matches due to being comfortable on the ball.

Chaine never really saw game-time as extensively as this with Bloemfontein Celtic and Chippa United, respectively, but contributed to Zakhele Lepasa’s second goal and third on the night for the Bucs when they routed Royal AM at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday.

“We are in a fantastic space with goalkeepers, the squad is very strong and the goalkeeping department is not an exception,” said Riveiro.

“We have four exceptional goalkeepers, all ready to deliver, all ready to play with different characteristics.

“We are more than calm when they are in goals, what I expect is for them to continue making steps forward in their performances, in the way they contribute to the team, in every phase of the game, not only in the defensive phase obviously.”

Against Sekhukhune United last year, Richard Ofori was caught out several times, as Pirates eventually lost 2-0.

“It’s important that we have solid keepers because we’re a team that’s used to spending most of the time on the ball,” added Riveiro.

“The participation of the keepers in this type of team is key because they are asked a few times in the keep to appear [further forward], they are all excellent in that sense and they also help us to play with 11 players in possession.

“It’s an interesting challenge for keepers to participate in both phases and as you said they are all high-profile goalkeepers in different moments in their careers but they are all excellent professionals helping us a lot, not only in games but on a day-to-day basis.”

Pirates, during the off season, added Melusi Buthelezi from TS Galaxy but he has yet to feature in the side but he will as Pirates have five fronts to fight for, while Siyabonga Mpontshane is also part of the set-up.

Pirates host Sekhukhune in the MTN8 quarter-finals at Orlando Stadium on Saturday (18:00), which is a repeat of the Ke Yona Cup final of last season. They won this cup last term when they beat AmaZulu in the final.
