SSU Claim Victory Over Chiefs In Polokwane

SuperSport United returned to winning ways as they narrowly defeated Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in the DStv Premiership at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The result sees United climb in third position on the log with 13 points from six matches, while Chiefs are eighth with as many points from seven games.

It took only two minutes for the home side to score with Bradley Grobler finding Terrence Dzvukamanja, who powered home with his left foot to open the scoring. Chiefs who dominated possession in the first half wasted numerous opportunities to get back into the game.

Ashley Du Preez had a tame shot in the sixth minute and a minute later he found Christian Saile who could not get to ball on time. Zitha Kwinika could have equalised in the 26th minute from a Sifiso Hlanti cross but he shot over the bar.

United had to make an early substitute in the 29th minute brining in Keenan Bezuidenhout for Gamphani Lungu. The 21-year-old almost had an immediate impact as his side won a corner kick which was ultimately saved by Itumeleng Khune.

Chiefs kept trying to find the equaliser in the 32nd minute Jasond Gonzalez found Saile, whose header was off target. That was followed by a series of near misses from Amakhosi with match going into the break with Matsatsantsa in the lead.

In the second half Gavin Hunt introduced Gape Moralo for Phathutshedzo Nange at the start of the stanza but Chiefs continued their dominance however were still let down by their final touch.

With 19 minutes left on the clock Chiefs won a set-piece, Hlanti stepped up but Ricardo Goss was also equally up to the task. Bezuidenhout could have sealed the victory with the second goal in the 74th minute but it wasn’t to be as Khune came out with a save.

Even in the last 10 minutes of the match there were chances for Castillo that landed in Goss’s hands and Gonzalez who was off target. Chiefs are now winless in two straight league matches picking up only a point in those outings.
