Sundowns Close In On Pitso Record

Mamelodi Sundowns completed the double over Royal AM after a convincing 2-0 victory in KwaZulu Natal, closing in on Pitso Mosimane’s points record.

It was a good start from both sides with a lot of intensity but 20 minutes into the game both goalkeepers were not troubled.

Sundowns had a glorious chance in the 30th minute, but Peter Shalulile failed to convert. However, Sundowns continued to control the tempo of the game more and more.

After 35 minutes Sundowns combined well, and Aubrey Modiba made a breakthrough pass to Shalulile who laid it off to Neo Maema but his shot was deflected and hit the left post.

Sundowns broke the deadlock after 40 minutes after brilliant footwork from Tashreeq Matthews to play through to Lesiba Nku, Hugo Nyame made a save but Shalulile scored a brilliant bicycle kick.

Downs had a penalty shout in the 45 minute after Nku went down inside the penalty box after a good type of football but referee Akhona Makalima waved played on.

The second half started with Downs looking to continue where they left off and increase the lead.

After 49 minutes gone Sundowns were inches away from making it two, a goal-mouth scramble ended up with the Shalulile hitting the upright.

But Sundowns continued to pile the pressure, and Shalulile came up with a powerful shot from outside the box, forcing Nyame into a good save.

After 73 minutes of football, Nku made it 2-0 with a lovely curler from the right side, beating Nyame. A little later Mendieta had a good shot but it flew over over the crossbar.

Marcelo Allende missed a late penalty in injury-time, sending it flying over the bar.

Sundowns extended their unbeaten run to 51 league matches and edged closer to break the 71 points record.
