Sundowns Legend Ready To Grow And Help Club After CAF A Course

Mamelodi Sundowns legend Godfrey Sapula says his CAF A License will help him grow to become a better coach at the club and help them sustain their legacy and success.

The 2006/07 Premier Soccer League Footballer of the Season graduated with his CAF A License this week at the South African Football Association headquarters with several other coaches as he looks to take the next step of his career.

Currently working with the Sundowns affiliate club M Tigers, Sapula feels his coaching qualifications now hold him in good stead to help the club further develop players ready for the demands of the high-pressure environment in the first-team of Masandawana.

“At the moment I am part of the elite group which is sort of your reserve team at Sundowns, and I’ve been grateful for the support I’ve received over the years you know,” Sapula said when asked by iDiski Times where he sees himself fitting into at Sundowns.

“Obviously the demands from the first team with the success that has enjoyed, there’s more demands and pressure from the elite group to the academy coaches to empower themselves and get better and improve.

“So this [is what we need to do] to be able to sustain the success of the first team with producing a product that will be able to fit in continue the legacy the team has been building over the years now – so to answer you directly I think this course will actually arm me more in making sure I grow and develop to be a better coach [at Sundowns].”

Sapula was one of several coaches who have been waiting patiently for the course to return to South Africa, having secured his B License over a decade ago.

“It’s been a hectic, seven, eight months but well worth it, I treasure, each and every moment, I did my CAF B, 12 years ago in 2012, and we’ve been waiting for this CAF A,” Sapula said.

“Thanks to the leadership of SAFA to bring this CAF A, exciting moment for me, I accept it with great humility and [I’m] grateful to have been part of this course which was very hectic and a lot of exchange of important information with a great calibre of coaching that wer had in this course.

“No doubt, the information will be very valuable [for our careers] from what we have gained from this course, and hopefully we can impact this knowledge to our respective clubs and make sure we continue to develop football in this country.”
