Tinkler Confirms Major Blow For City

Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler has confirmed that they’ve lost versatile Thato Mokeke for the rest of the season.

The 33-year-old last played against Lamontville Golden Arrows in the Carling Knockout Cup round of 16. Mokeke has been instrumental for City in all the years he has been in the club, making 171 appearances.

The former SuperSport United man has been out injured for the last seven matches, but City still managed to win five of them, losing only one.

While the Cape Town-based side recently welcomed DRC international Nathan Fasika Idumba, who missed the first six months of the season, Tinkler confirmed that Mokeke will be out for the rest of 2023/24.

“We finished off with quite few injuries unfortunately, Thato Mokeke, Marc [Van Heerden], [Brice] Ambina, playing some guys with knocks and I think this month allows those players to come back,” Tinkler told the media.

“Thato Mokeke not so much because I think we’ve lost him for the rest of the season.”

Young Luyolo Slatsha has fit-in like a glove in the City midfield and given Tinkler a lot of options with Cameroonian Brice Ambina also back from injury.

The Citizen are sitting second on the league table and look to maintain their good start of the season.

They will resume their DStv Premiership against troubled Moroka Swallows on 15 February at DHL Stadium.
